South African Human Rights Commission co-hosts seminar to
interrogate the status of Human Rights on the African continent

The South African Human Rights Commission will, in collaboration with the
South African Human Rights Institute, host a two-day seminar this week on
Thursday and Friday, 25 and 27 October 2007, as part of commemorations of the
launch of the African Charter on Human and People's Rights.

The purpose of the seminar is to amongst others, deepen and popularise the
understanding of the provisions of the African Charter on Human and People's
Rights, and deliberate on topics such the African Union, the African Court on
Human Rights, the Protocol on the Rights of Women in Africa, the general status
of human rights on the continent with special focus on Sudan and Zimbabwe.

The seminar will also endeavour to develop strategic interventions that will
contribute to the programme on improvement of human rights in the region at the
42nd session of the African Commission on Human and People's Rights taking
place in Congo, Brazzaville on 14 to 28 November 2007.

Various stakeholders from around the continent comprising non-governmental
organisations (NGOs) from Darfur, Zimbabwe, Angola, Mozambique, Kenya, Malawi
and South Africa are expected to attend the seminar.

Amongst others expected to speak at the seminar are: Mr Jody Kollapen South
African Human Rights Commission Chairperson; Dr Eltigani E M Senior Economic
Advisor at the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa in Addis Ababa; Dr
Usman Bugaje, Nigeria, Outgoing Chairman of the House Committee on Foreign
Affairs, House of Representatives, National Assembly of Nigeria, Abuja; Michelo
Hansungule, Professor of Human Rights Law, Law Faculty of University of
Pretoria; Dr Amir Osman International Outreach Co-ordinator on Darfur,
Abdelbagi Jibril Working for Darfur Relief and Documentation Centre; and South
African government representatives from the Department of Justice and Foreign
Affairs.
