The South African government will from Thursday, 7 June 2007 to Saturday, 9
June 2007, host an international conference on Social Protection and Poverty
Reduction, under the theme South-South Co-operation on Social Protection and
Poverty Reduction, in Cape Town.
The conference will take place at the Lord Charles Hotel in Somerset West
and will be officially opened by the Ministers of Social Development, Finance
and the Minister in the Presidency on the morning of Thursday, 7 June 2007.
Over and above Ministers responsible for social protection in the Southern
African Development Community (SADC) and Latin American regions, the Honourable
Deputy President, Ms Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, is scheduled to participate in the
conference.
Organised on behalf of government by the Social Sector Cluster (co-led by
the Presidency and the Department of Social Development), the conference will
bring together for dialogue researchers, academics and senior government
officials from SADC and Latin American countries.
The objectives of the conference are to:
* Establish an evidence-based dialogue between decision makers and researchers
in the developing world, which would inform policies on broad-based social
protection and accelerate progress towards the achievement of the Millennium
Development Goals (MDGs) and human development.
* Engage policy makers on the nature, feasibility and sustainability of an
integrated approach to provide broad-based social protection accelerate poverty
reduction and promote the achievement of the MDGs.
Parts of the conference are sponsored by the United Nations Development
Programme (UNDP), Regional Bureau for Africa at the United Nations
Headquarters, International Poverty Centre, Regional Bureau for Latin America
and the government of the United Kingdom (UK).
