Software Freedom Day
11 September 2007
Software Freedom Day is held annually to educate the public about the
benefits of using high quality Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) in
education, in government, at home, in business. FOSS is software that provides
one with a source code and the freedom to modify and distribute the modified
versions.
It is free in that users may freely copy and distribute the software.
Therefore, it has benefits for students and small business owners who often
cannot afford to buy expensive packages. To take the form of exhibitions and
workshops, the event falls within the mandate of the DST to improve public
understanding of science and technology. It is expected to help the department
create ties with the open source community and give the general public access
to high quality software.
All media are invited to attend.
