The South African Police Service (SAPS) invites the media to the launch of
the first of the Information Centres that will be established countrywide at
Mmakau Police Station, outside Pretoria on Friday, 14 July 2006.
The Information Centres at rural and Presidential Police Stations will be
equipped with material such as publications, posters and other legal material
relevant to policing to assist police officials and victims of crime on how to
report and to handle various crimes.
The law publications to be supplied to identified police stations include
among others applied law for police officials, criminal procedure handbook and
principles of evidence.
The publications will be supplied to 475 identified police stations while
1300 information posters which would cover, inter alia, crimes such as rape,
indecent assault, domestic violence and assault will also be supplied to
identified police stations.
The launch of the Information Centres is part of a joint project between the
SAPS and its labour unions under the banner of the Safety and Security Sectoral
Bargaining Council (SSSBC) agreed to in 2005, on the utilisation of funds
earmarked for transformatory measures in the SAPS.
The SSSBC will officially handover the publications and posters to the
Police National Commissioner, Commissioner Jackie Selebi, who'll be the
