S van der Merwe to address Multidimensional and Integrated Peace
Operations seminar, 20 to 21 Sept

Foreign Affairs Deputy Minister Sue van der Merwe to address
the South Africa-Norwegian seminar on Multidimensional and Integrated Peace
Operations

19 September 2007

Foreign Affairs Deputy Minister, Sue van der Merwe, will deliver a keynote
address at the seminar co-hosted by the Department of Foreign Affairs and the
Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs entitled "Multidimensional and Integrated
Peace Operations: Trends and Challenges," scheduled for 20 and 21 September
2007 at the Sandton Convention Centre.

The "Multidimensional and Integrated Peace Operations: Trends and
Challenges" Programme was initiated as a follow up programme to the Oslo
Conference on Integrated Missions of 2005, and seeks to strengthen the capacity
of the United Nations (UN) and its Member States in making optimal use of
limited resources to build lasting peace in countries affected by war. The
programme is co-ordinated with identified complementary initiatives such as
those of the UN Department of Peacekeeping Operations, the UN Development Group
and the UN Office for the Co-ordination of Humanitarian Affairs.

Deputy Minister Van der Merwe's participation in the seminar is informed by
the fact that issues of peace operations, conflict resolution and post-conflict
construction are central to South Africa's foreign policy. South Africa's
engagement in conflict resolution is informed by the African Union's Post
Conflict Reconstruction and Development Policy Framework.
