The MEC for Health and Social Development honourable Seaparo Sekoati and MEC
for Education in Limpopo honourable Dr Aaron Motsoaledi invite all members of
media to the Greenery Project launch.
The Toronto Primary School greenery project, which is located in the
Capricorn district, started in 1998 after identifying poverty and HIV and AIDS
as challenges facing the communities within the Polokwane municipality. The
school started with a vegetable garden, herbs and then added to having a
medicinal garden as part of their plantings. The main aim of planting medicinal
plants was to bring natural education closer to the communities and to build
knowledge on the use of medicinal plants.
To date Capricorn district have established 22 greenery projects in clinics
and 43 in primary schools. This illustrates good integration and partnership
between education and health and social development departments.
The Department of Health and Social Development in Limpopo is proud to be
part of this event that proves that together we can fight and eliminate poverty
in our communities. Mrs Moagi is a pensioner and also looks after two orphans.
The house that they were living in was of high health risk.
The aim of the greenery projects at both clinic and school are as
follows:
* to improve availability of vitamin A rich food through establishment of
vegetable gardens and fruit tree production
* to encourage active participation of malnourished target groups into their
treatment
* to empower malnourished clients with skills on improvement of food
accessibility and cash generation
* to train malnutrition victims on proper food preparation, consumption and
distribution
* to encourage learners' participation in school feeding activities.
