Handing over of certificates in mining to the previously
unskilled mine workers

1 April 2009

The Director-General of Minerals and Energy, Advocate Sandile Nogxina,
invites members of the media to attend the official presentation of
certificates to candidates who have completed a programme in mining skills.

This programme is aimed at training and equipping illegal miners as well as
ex-mine workers with the necessary basic mining skills, and to take steps to
legalise their operations. It also seeks to consolidate the department’s
intervention on mitigating the current global economic crisis which has hit the
mining sector in South Africa.

To realise this initiative, the department requested the assistance of the
Mining Qualifications Authority (MQA) and the Council for Mineral Technologies
(Mintek), to provide them with the necessary skills. Two hundred (200) people
were identified to undergo training from the Nongoma area; currently the first
group of fifty miners has successfully completed its training programme, which
was conducted by Mintek between January and March 2009. The rest of the
remaining groups will undergo their training during the course of this
year.
