Launch of KwaZulu-Natal Public Service Training Academy

26 June 2007

KwaZulu-Natal Premier Sibusiso Ndebele will officially launch the
KwaZulu-Natal Public Service Training Academy on 2 July 2007 commencing at
17h30 at 80 Bartell Road, Glenwood, Durban (ex Dokkies).

The KwaZulu-Natal Public Service Training Academy will serve as the centre
of human capability development, producing public servants who are skilled,
productive and dedicated to serving the public in the province. The core
business of the academy will be research, internal consultancy and
training.

The Academy will be responsible for the following key functions:

* skills planning, compliance and monitoring
* research and organisational development
* generic and functional training
* quality assurance
* knowledge management
* curriculum and learning material development
* adult basic education and training.

The Academy will ensure the co-ordination of developmental assignments, the
identification of potential, mentoring and coaching support, international
exchanges and tours, placements in the private sector, other spheres of
government, tertiary institutions and vice versa.

Learning programmes offered by the Academy will be developed in-house in
partnership with academic and professional institutions. The programmes will
take the form of short courses and qualifications. Short courses will be both
credit and non-credit-bearing. Credit bearing short courses will be developed
along the requirements of an appropriate unit standard. Emphasis will be placed
on the practical nature of learning with the course content comprising 30%
theory and 70% practical.

Programmes will have pre-assessment, work based assignments and
post-assessments. Non-credit bearing short courses will be developed along
stringent quality standards and will be outcomes based.

To ensure that the learning programmes address the distinctive needs of the
KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Administration, subject matter experts from within the
administration will participate in the development of learning material. Core
learning areas will include:

* management and leadership
* people management
* change and service delivery
* general administration
* governance.

The programmes will target all public servants in the province with specific
attendance criteria. Programmes critical to improving service delivery and
customer care will be compulsory for all public servants.

The Academy has been accredited as a delivery and assessment site by the
Public Sector and Education and Training Authority (PSETA).

Media are invited to attend. However, due to a limited number of seats,
journalists attending this event must confirm their attendance by no later than
16h00 on Thursday, 28 June 2007 as per the contact details listed below.
