S Ndebele on end of Ramadan and Eid-ul-Fitr celebration

Message from KwaZulu-Natal Premier Sibusiso Ndebele to mark the
end of Ramadan and the celebration of Eid-ul-Fitr

11 October 2007

The richness of KwaZulu-Natal's heritage is aptly reflective of the
diversity of the millions of South Africans who reside in this province.

Since the current provincial government came into office, it has been a
provincial priority that dignity be restored to our collective heritage and
that we correct the distortions of the past. To that effect the provincial
government has called for the establishment of Local Heritage Forums throughout
the province. These community-based institutions must ensure that our
collective heritage is highlighted and preserved, and that there is a transfer
of knowledge and understanding among the people of the province so that we
embrace the future as a united people who draw strength from our diversity.

Islam regards itself as a universal brotherhood, and the charitable deeds
born of its followers' social conscience are widely recognised. Almsgiving is
in general terms a paramount duty.

Muslims attend Mosque daily. Friday is the sacred day with the main centre
of worship in each town throughout the world known as the Jumma Masjid, or
Friday Mosque. A sermon is delivered, but this must be completed before the 1
pm call to prayer.

Before entering the prayer hall, the faithful remove footwear and make
ablution of face, hands and feet. Once inside and having prostrated towards the
Grand Mosque in Mecca, union with Allah is sought via prayer and recitation
from the Koran.

Ramadan is the month-long, dawn-to-dusk fast and opportunity to correct
'indulgent behaviour' while reflecting on the plight of the world's poor and
downtrodden. The end of Ramadan is marked by the feast of Eid-ul-Fitr, when the
faithful give thanks to Allah for the bounties they are fortunate enough to
enjoy.

On behalf of the provincial government of KwaZulu-Natal, I (Premier Ndebele)
extend our warmest wishes to Muslims celebrating Eid-ul-Fitr and wish all
Muslims Eid-Mubarak.
