S Ndebele on elections date 2009

Date for elections in KwaZulu-Natal

12 February 2009

KwaZulu-Natal Premier Sibusiso Ndebele earlier today, 12 February 2009,
called for an election for the Provincial Legislature of KwaZulu-Natal and set
22 April 2009 as the voting day.

In terms of section 108(2) of the Constitution of the Republic of South
Africa, 1996, read with section 18 of the Electoral Act, 1998 (Act No. 73 of
1998), the Premier, after consultation with the Electoral Commission, must call
an election for the Provincial Legislature of KwaZulu-Natal and set a date as
the voting day.

The Proclamation by the Premier follows an announcement on Tuesday, 10
February 2009, by the President of the Republic of South Africa, Mr Kgalema
Motlanthe, that the forthcoming elections would be held on 22 April 2009.

"Democracy is entrenched in our constitution and voting is one of our basic
rights which we must use to choose our leaders. Therefore, all of us women,
men, workers, youth, professionals, people with disabilities, traditional
leaders, religious communities, business people and rural communities must vote
and utilise the opportunities that have come with our freedom.

We believe the credibility and authenticity of the voters' roll depends on
the participation of all South Africans. To this end, we must make every effort
to ensure that we cast our vote because each one of us can play a meaningful
role in strengthening our democracy through our secret vote," said Premier
Ndebele.
