senseless death
26 February 2009
KwaZulu-Natal Premier Sibusiso Ndebele this morning expressed remorse at the
senseless death of a young father and musician Philani âAmenâ Mkhanyawo, who
was killed this morning.
Mr Mkhanyawo, a father of three children, was a musician with the Ithemba
Gospel Choir, was shot several times at his home in N Section Umlazi. According
to the police, Mr Mkhanyawo was shot several times when a group of men entered
his home without consent. Details are still sketchy at this time.
Mr Mkhanyawo was a bass singer in the group, and was one of the founding
members. He also worked part-time for Mondi paper.
Premier Ndebele and his wife Zama assisted the Ithemba group in their
musical career. The group against many odds, had risen to great heights, and
were very thankful to the Ndebele family.
Premier Ndebele said: âThe senseless death of a man at the prime of his life
is callous and unnecessary. Amen as he was fondly known was ambitious and a go
getter. Why this savage attack on an innocent man is bewildering.â
Premier Ndebele expressed his deepest sympathies to the family and assured
the communities that the police were working round the clock to capture the
perpetrators of this heinous crime.
