the brutal murder of Inkosi Mbongeleni Zondi
22 January 2009
KwaZulu-Natal Premier Sibusiso Ndebele has expressed outrage and shock at
the callous murder of Inkosi Mbongeleni Zondi, a descendant of Inkosi Bhambatha
Zondi who led the revolt against the 1906 Poll Tax Imposition, who was murdered
earlier today Thursday, 22 January 2009.
"I received the news of the brutal murder of Inkosi Mbongeleni Zondi whilst
attending the annual January Cabinet Lekgotla in Pretoria. I informed President
Kgalema Motlanthe as well as the Minister for Safety and Security Nathi
Mthethwa. I also informed the President of the ANC Jacob Zuma. We are being
regularly updated by KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and
Liaison, Bheki Cele who is at the scene. We are confident that the South
African Police Service will soon arrest the perpetrators of this heinous crime
and ensure that they are brought to book.
"Only a few weeks ago (3 January 2009), the President of the ANC, Jacob
Zuma, and I were together with Inkosi Zondi and the Zondi clan at a ceremony at
their homestead at eNgome, outside Greytown, where both the ANC President and I
were honoured by Inkosi Zondi and the Zondi clan.
"On behalf of the government and people of KwaZulu-Natal, we want to offer
our sincere condolences to Inkosi Zondi's family, the Zondi clan, relatives and
friends. Our thoughts and prayers are with them during these difficult
moments," said the Premier.
