Eight thousand adult learners will receive certificates in basic literacy on
11 September 2007.
KwaZulu-Natal Premier Sibusiso Ndebele will be the keynote speaker at this
very exiting ceremony.
Masifundisane, the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education's flagship
community literacy programme, a joint initiative with the Office of the Premier
and Cabinet, has been performing beyond our expectations.
It was launched in 2006 to address the legacy of adult illiteracy in
KwaZulu-Natal. Masifundisane forms the blueprint of the national Department of
Education's newly launched illiteracy eradication campaign.
Close to 1,2 million people in KwaZulu-Natal have not seen the inside of a
classroom, while almost one million people are functionally illiterate.
Among the learners who will be graduating on Tuesday, is a 101-year-old
grandmother and a 19-year-old learner.
We invite the media to share in this touching experience. Media transport
will be available from Durban.
