7 March 2007
KwaZulu-Natal Premier Sibusiso Ndebele will deliver the keynote address at
the commemoration of Maqhamsela Khanyile, the first South African Christian
martyr, on 11 March 2007 at Kwa Mondi Sports Grounds at Eshowe commencing at
09h00.
The KwaZulu-Natal provincial government declared 2007 the "Year of Luthuli"
and Premier Ndebele officially launched a year long programme of events for the
commemoration of Chief Albert Luthuli at Groutville on 27 February 2007.
This was in recognition of the role that Chief Albert Luthuli played in the
liberation of this country. From his rural base of KwaDukuza, Chief Luthuli was
able to find common strands in his religion, which brought his own social and
political condition in apartheid South Africa closer to that of all the
oppressed people of the world.
As part of the 2007 commemoration of Chief Albert Luthuli programme, the
KwaZulu-Natal government will be commemorating the death of Mr Maqhamusela
Khanyile of Eshowe, who was killed in the late 19th century for being the first
to convert to Christianity.
