Ma-Adelaide Tambo
1 February 2007
The Premier of Limpopo, Sello Moloto, expressed shock upon hearing of the
death of Ma-Adelaide Tambo this morning. Adelaide Tambo was the widow of the
late African National Congress (ANC) leader Oliver Tambo. During the dark days
of apartheid and exile, Ma-Tambo stood side by side with our president comrade
Oliver Tambo in fighting the oppressive white minority regime.
She was one of the early pioneers of women leaders who fought for women
rights in our county and is particularly remembered for her various leadership
roles in the ANC Women's League. As one of the surviving member of a generation
of women who marched to the Union Buildings in 1956, Ma-Tambo stands amongst
the giants who fought for our country's liberation.
We send our condolences to the African National Congress and the Women's
League for losing a brave stalwart of national and international significance.
Our thoughts also go out to her children and members of her family for having
lost a caring mother and a grandmother. We pray that they find comfort in the
knowledge that our entire country is behind them during this moment of
grief.
May her soul rest in peace!
