The MEC for Public Works, Roads and Transport, Honourable Seiso Mohai, has
approved amendments to the provincial notices regarding number plates; this
after the department was flooded with requests from the public.
These new amendments in the main, introduce:
1. an increase to the maximum number of characters on personalised number
plates from six to seven
2. plastic plates for the regular, special and personalised number plates
3. extend the cut-off date for the use of old black and white number plates to
31 March 2007.
Personalised plates must consist of at least one, but not more than seven
letters followed by the letters FS; or a combination of a maximum of seven
letters and figures, followed by the letters FS: provided that seven characters
followed by the letters FS must only be displayed on number plates of 520
millimetres (mm) x 113mm and 305mm x 165mm in diameter.
Plastic number plates, with a cheetah landscape as on the metal number
plates, will now be available and permissible. Plastic plates shall be
permissible for the regular, special and personalised number plates. Motorists
with registered vehicles in the Free State will now have a choice between the
metal and the plastic number plates. The cut-off date for the old black and
white number plates, that was supposed to be 31 December 2006, has been
extended until Saturday, 31 March 2007. All these three amendments will be
effective as of Sunday, 1 April 2007.
