launch: Grootvlei Department of Correctional Services Free State and Northern
Cape region
15 February 2006
The anti-retroviral treatment (ART) site at Grootvlei was established as a
partnership project between the Department of Health and Correctional Services.
It is the first accredited Correctional Services ART site in the country.
The National Cabinet approved the implementation of ARTs on 19 November 2003
and the Free State Department of Health started with the implementation on May
2004. The Comprehensive HIV and AIDS Care, Management and Treatment Plan as our
policy guideline acknowledges the fact that in order to offer HIV and AIDS care
and treatment, tight linkages are needed with other partners.
The Free State Department of Health will ensure that the standards that are
established for quality and accreditation are replicated in the correctional
services facilities. Issues of pharmacovigilance, monitoring, evaluation and
research agendas will be co-ordinated with the Department of Health, to ensure
the success of the National Comprehensive plan.
Grootvlei prison was accredited as an ART site on 3 October 2005 and will
commence with treatment of inmates on 1 March 2006.
