Call for entries for the 7th annual Centre for Public Service
Innovation (CPSI) Public Sector Innovation Awards

16 February 2009

On Tuesday, 17 February 2009 at 10h30, the Minister for Public Service and
Administration, Mr Richard Baloyi, and Premier Edna Molewa, will officially
call for entries for the 2009 annual CPSI awards programme at Mmabatho Tusk
Casino, North West province. The Minister will be accompanied amongst others by
the government leadership of the North West province and guests from other
provinces.

The Centre for Public Service Innovation is a government component
established by the Minister for Public Service and Administration to enhance
the improvement of public service delivery through innovation. The CPSI has
since 2001 been driving the improvement of public service delivery by
entrenching the culture of innovation in the South African public service. This
is an institution that helps government search for ideas that work in
practically solving service delivery challenges.

Several government departments are engaged in innovative initiatives to
improve service delivery in the public sector. The challenge we face is that
innovative projects are not fully acknowledged and recognised. For the past six
years the CPSI has sought to identify and recognise individuals and
institutions whose initiatives, projects and products are outstanding both in
terms of innovation excellence and long term sustainability.

Thuli Radebe, Executive Director of CPSI says, “The CPSI Public Sector
Innovation Awards look for individuals who display innovation in their work,
and go beyond the traditional way of doing things. The awards recognise
projects and programmes that are directed at improving public service delivery,
thus improving the standard of living for South Africans.”

The CPSI awards programme seeks to celebrate the successes of individuals,
teams and entire institutions in the quest for a more effective, accountable
government and improved service delivery. This is done by promoting creativity,
knowledge sharing and benchmarking in the public service.

Public servants and institutions across all the spheres of government that
have innovative projects are invited to enter for the 2009 annual CPSI Public
Sector Innovation Awards.

The categories are:

* innovative partnerships in service delivery
* innovative use of information communication technology for effective service
delivery
* innovative service delivery institutions
* innovative enhancements on internal systems within government.
* innovative service delivery projects involving the South African government
in partnership with other African governments.

Nominations for the innovator of the year will be drawn from the
above-mentioned categories by the adjudication panel.

Prizes will be conferred to winners at a prestigious gala dinner later this
year on a date and venue to be confirmed by the CPSI. Winners of the CPSI
innovation awards will be automatically entered for various international
awards including the United Nations Public Service Awards, the Commonwealth
Association of Public Administration and Management (CAPAM) Innovation Awards,
and the all Africa Innovation Awards, to showcase South Africa’s profile in
these sought-after awards.
