Mahlangu to unveil emergency call boxes in Alexandra

22 May 2007

Gauteng Local Government MEC Qedani Dorothy Mahlangu will on Thursday, 24
May 2007, unveil the emergency call boxes at the Jukskei River in Alexandra,
east of Johannesburg.

The call boxes will be used by residents to report disaster incidents in the
events of river flooding and other crime related incidents in the area. The
installation of these boxes will go a long way in saving many lives lost as a
result of drowning, crime and shack fires, among others.

The call boxes are part of an ongoing Jukskei River safety pilot project
conducted by the Gauteng Department of Local Government in partnership with the
City of Johannesburg. The use of call boxes will also drastically reduce the
response time and will be quicker to deal with life threatening incidents as
they are connected to all existing call centres in and around Alexandra.
