Gauteng Local Government MEC Qedani Mahlangu has welcomed the City of
Johannesburg's improved financial statements saying the fruits of Project
Consolidate are starting to show.
This is after the city received a qualified audit report from the
Auditor-General (AG) for the first time in 11 years.
For the past 10 years, the City of Johannesburg has been receiving
disclaimers from the AG due to the poor state of financial management.
The MEC said the improvement in the City of Johannesburg's finances is a
sign that Project Consolidate, a hands-on approach to assist struggling
municipalities, will go a long way in assisting Gauteng municipalities to
manage their finances properly.
"This is good news, although the report is not yet clean, I believe the next
time the City will get an unqualified audit report," said Mahlangu.
