Slovo Informal settlement to celebrate the eradication of bucket toilets
22 October 2007
Gauteng Local Government MEC Qedani Dorothy Mahlangu will tomorrow, Tuesday,
23 October 2007, visit Alrapark in Lesedi Local Municipality near Duduza in
Nigel, to celebrate the eradication of the bucket system in the area.
The visit forms part of the Gauteng Imbizo Focus Week of direct interaction
with residents. Alrapark is one of the many areas in Gauteng in which all the
identified bucket toilets have been removed.
The inhumane and unhygienic toilets have been replaced with ventilated
improved pit latrines (VIP) to give people the dignity they deserve.
Other areas that have seen the completion of bucket toilets in the province
are, Rietvlei Ext in Mogale City, Masechaba View and Impumelo section in
Lesedi.
The eradication of the bucket system in all formal residential areas
established by 1994 will be met within the timeline of December 2007, as
indicated in the government's programme of action. Government is committed to
meet its objective to improve the lives of the people by improving living
conditions that are undignified and inhumane, such as the bucket system.
