Public Protector on Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital
investigation

In-depth investigation launched into Chris Hani Baragwanath
Hospital

4 October 2007

The Public Protector Advocate ML Mushwana received a briefing this morning
on the situation at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital and has decided to launch a
full investigation into the matter. This follows a fact-finding mission that
went to the hospital on Monday this week.

"From our preliminary finding the situation looks very bad. We need to go
deeper into the matter and compile a full report. I am deeply concerned by the
funding cuts indicated by the hospital management and its impact on service
delivery," Advocate Mushwana said.

The office interacted with the hospital and its management during the
fact-finding mission. It indicated to management that it was not there to
criticise but to assist where possible. The office wishes to thank the hospital
management who were very co-operative.

The investigation is receiving high priority and the office will communicate
the outcome in due course. The office will now interact with other stakeholders
including the Gauteng health department to find a resolution to the
situation.

The Public Protector's office is established in terms of Chapter 9 of the
Constitution of South Africa. It strengthens our young constitutional democracy
through, among others, investigating maladministration, delays in service
delivery, and allegations of impropriety or prejudice by public administration
in any sphere of government.
