The Department of Provincial and Local Government and South African Local
Government Association (Salga) are pleased to report that following the
extensive process of consultations with relevant stakeholders, they have
completed the disability framework for local government.
The policy framework seeks, amongst others, to ensure that local government
mainstreams disability issues into its programmes, policies, projects and
activities. More important, the policy seeks to ensure that people with
disabilities are included in the local government workforce and actively
participates in service delivery decision making processes such as the
integrated development planning forums and that they benefit from government
development initiatives.
The department will in partnership with Salga be launching the framework at
a national event which will target, amongst others, stakeholders from the local
government sphere, the institution of traditional leadership, disabled people's
organisations and disabled community members. The objectives of the launch are
to:
* raise awareness on the disability framework for local government
* advocate for its implementation by provincial departments of local
government, municipalities, national departments, Salga and any other
stakeholders operating in the local government sphere
* urge local government leadership and personnel to mainstream disability in
their policies, plans and projects
* advocate for disaggregated reporting for effective monitoring
* showcase disability aids for reasonable accommodation
* provide networking opportunities among role players and with resource
providers.
Share progress made in the implementation of the objectives of the African
decade for disabled persons.
