Police Service on remuneration during election 2009

Remuneration for police officials deployed during the election
period

21 April 2009

In terms of an agreement concluded at the Safety and Security Sectoral
Bargaining Council (SSBC), it was decided that members of the South African
Police Service deployed during major events would receive an all inclusive
special events allowance of R560 per day. The general election is regarded as a
major event by the South African Police Service.

This allowance is applicable to members holding the rank of Constable to
Senior Superintendent and is not applicable to top management. It is payable to
members deployed on election duties, including during the run-up to the general
election and in the post election period.

Further to a meeting between representatives of the South African Police
Service and the labour union Police and Prison Civil Rights Union (POPCRU) this
morning, it has been decided that on the day of the general election, that is
22 April 2009 which has been declared a public holiday, the normal prescripts
with regard to remuneration on a public holiday will apply. Therefore, all
members performing election related duties tomorrow will be able to claim
public holiday remuneration.

The top management of the South African Police Service recognises the vital
role played by the security services during the election period, thanks each
and every member for their dedication and is appreciative of their efforts in
ensuring that the people of this country can exercise their democratic right to
vote in a safe and secure environment.
