The Speakersâ Forum of South Africa, chaired by Parliamentâs National
Assembly Speaker the Honourable Gwen Mahlangu-Nkabinde, will host a press
conference on Thursday, 26 February at 13h50 to outline the aims of a two-day
speakersâ forum end of term seminar being held at the Good Hope Chambers at
Parliament on 26 and 27 February.
The following Speakersâ Forum members and European Union (EU)
representatives will also be at the press conference:
* Chairperson of the National Council of Provinces Honourable Mninwa
Mahlangu
* Speaker of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature Honourable Richard
Mdakane
* Speaker of the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Legislature Honourable Willis
Mchunu
* Speaker of the North West Provincial Legislature Honourable Thandi
Modise
* Member of the EU Parliament Honourable Vittorio Prodi
* EU ambassador to South Africa His Excellency Lodewyk Briët.
The seminar is being conducted in conjunction with the European Union (EU)
funders of the legislature support programme which started in 2004 and ended in
January 2009 and current funders of a 15 million Euro Legislative Sector
Support Programme that will run from 1 April 2009 to 2013.
The seminar will:
* Review and evaluate the legislative sectorâs strategic developments from 2004
to 2009
* Explore and strategise how the legislative sector can continue to be the
backbone of South African society.
Delegates to the seminar include Speakers and Deputy Speakers from
Parliament and Provincial Legislatures, Chief Whips, Committee Chairpersons,
Secretaries, Deputy Secretaries and senior officials from legislatures, members
of the EU Parliament, the EU Ambassador to South Africa Mr Lodewyk Briët and
members of the EU Commission based in South Africa.
