It is all systems for Fifa's Confederations and 2010 World Cups,
Parliament's Portfolio Committee on sport and recreation heard from host cities
this week. The Confederations Cup will take place in June in what many see as a
dress rehearsal for the 2010 World Cup.
Even though the national assembly went on recess last week, the portfolio
committee on sport and recreation continued this week to deal with some of the
outstanding issues. And one of those was a briefing by the host cities of the
two competitions.
The host cities include Tshwane, Mangaung, Durban and Nelson Mandela
Metro.
Committee Chairperson Butana Komphela expressed delight at the news that the
host cities were ready.
"I am very delighted to say that all the cities are ready for both
Confederations Cup and 2010," Komphela said as he wished his committee members
well as they go to constituencies.
What made him even more excited was the fact that Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium
met the Confederations Cup deadline although it had earlier failed to satisfy
the Local Organising Committee (LOC) about its state of readiness for the
competition.
As a result of this failure, the LOC decided not to schedule any matches for
the stadium.
