System in Western Cape

Parliament will next week hold the last round of its countrywide public
hearings on the review of the Criminal Justice System in the Western Cape.
The review of the Criminal Justice System is aimed at reviving the country's
ailing crime-fighting strategy, by reinforcing all structures involved, from
the highest courts to the community policing forums.
The hearings will be conducted by the Portfolio Committees on Safety and
Security, Justice and Constitutional Development, Correctional Services and the
Select Committee on Security and Constitutional Affairs.
The hearings will focus largely on the seven-point plan to transform the
Criminal Justice System and the Victims Charter. The charter focuses on the
rights of victims of crime and the obligations of the state to them. It seeks
to balance the rights of the accused and the victims in a way that is
consistent with the Constitution.
