Parliament on ad hoc committee on V Pikoli matter

Joint ad-hoc committee begins work on Pikoli matter

13 January 2009

The 22-member Joint Ad-hoc Committee to consider President Kgalema
Motlanthe's decision to remove National Director of Public Prosecutions Vusi
Pikoli from his position begins its work tomorrow, Wednesday, 14 January 2009,
and will report to Parliament by 9 February 2009.

The committee's task is to recommend to the Houses of Parliament whether
Advocate Pikoli should be restored to office or not. The powers given to the
committee are in line with Joint Rule 32 of the Rules of Parliament. The
committee will determine its own procedure and will elect its own chairperson.
It will have the same general powers that other committees of Parliament have,
including the right to summon any person to appear before it to give evidence
or to produce documents.

Rather than simply referring the matter to plenary sessions of the National
Assembly (NA) and National Council of Provinces (NCOP), Parliament decided on a
more involved internal process to enable a more detailed consideration of the
President's decision and a thorough process to inform its final position on the
matter.

National Assembly members on the committee are:

* African National Congress: C Burgess, Y Carrim , BM Komphela, GB
Magwanishe, JC Moloi-Moropa, OE Monareng, AJ Nyambi, NN Sibhidi, J Maake
(alternate)

* Democratic Alliance: JT Delport, LK Joubert

* Inkatha Freedom Party: JH van der Merwe

* African Christian Democratic Party: SM Swart

Independent Democrats: P de Lille

National Council of Provinces members on the committee are:
BN Dlulane, WM Douglas, WJ le Roux, NF Mazibuko, Kgoshi M L Mokoena, AL Moseki,
ZC Ntuli, RJ Tau, FJ van Heerden.
