Potchefstroom: Acting Agriculture, Conservation and Environment MEC Phenye
Vilakazi this weekend promised his Department's full support to the North
West's latest beneficiaries of land restitution, the Barolong Boo Modiboa ba
Matlwana community, in Machavie, near Potchefstroom.
Speaking at the community's land restitution celebration on Saturday,
Vilakazi stated that the Department will be supporting the community of
beneficiaries through training and capacity building and the funding of
projects, in order to ensure the income sustainability of the settlement they
received.
The community, consisting of 1 556 beneficiaries, were given their rights in
land back by Agriculture and Land Affairs Minister Lulu Xingwana, in a unique
package that includes land under conservation, agricultural farms and
settlement rights.
"The unique nature of this claim calls on all parties to work together to
support the beneficiaries. My Department has come to the table with a package
totalling R1,7 million worth of projects such as a piggery, vegetable farming
and crop production. This enhances the existing value of the claim by ensuring
that the claimants get immediately busy in working the land," explained
Vilakazi.
The total value of the Barolong Boo Modiboa ba Matlwana's restored land
rights is R134 million, with over 16 000 hectares of land transferred into the
hands of the community. 14 000 of the hectares falls within the freshly
proclaimed National Highveld Park.
The claim is the second largest to be settled in the North West in less than
a month, on 6 July 2007, the Barokologadi ba ga Maotwe in Madikwe received
their land rights back in a claim worth R200 million.
