The MEC for Transport, Roads and Community Safety Phenye Vilakazi has
convened a meeting with the Dr Kenneth Kaunda District Municipality Regional
Taxi Council, taxi associations, South African Police Service commissioner and
Jaws traffic unit on 12 January 2009 to discuss the state of taxi operations in
that district.
Vilakaziâs visit to the district comes amidst conflict prevalent among taxi
associations and taxi operators over the routes in Klerksdorp, Potchefstroom,
Orkney, Stilfontein, Hartebeesfontein and Kanana. The ongoing conflict has also
led the department declaring the state of emergency in the district in an
effort to curb possible taxi violence.
He will also proceed to Klerksdorp and Potchefstroom taxi ranks.
