Water efficiency in schools successful

31 March 2009

The Minister of Local Government, Environmental Affairs and Development
Planning, Pierre Uys, will announce detail of successes with an awareness
campaign on water efficiency at 10h00 on Tuesday, 31 March 2009 at the Spine
Road Secondary School in Mitchell's Plain. The Minister will highlight the
initiatives undertaken by the department to install water efficient devices in
selected schools in the Western Cape Province.

This sustainable initiative is part of the Resource Efficiency Schools Water
Savings Project which commenced in March 2008. The project was conducted in
three pilot schools with hostels in the Karoo areas.

Substantial savings were realised at these schools. These results acted as
catalysts to the project being extended to more schools in the Mitchell’s Plain
and Khayelitsha areas. Ten high water consumption schools were identified as
priority to install the water saving devices.

Ample time is provided for interviews and photographs.
