The opening of new clinics in the Eastern Cape has not stopped with the
passing of Election Day. Honourable MEC Pemmy Majodina officially opened the
Wesley Clinic in Peddie and 15 other clinics, all with nursesâ homes attached
will be opened over the next month.
Today, she officially hands over a R6 million clinic to the villagers of
Qwiliqwili in the Tsomo area, and on Thursday to residents of Machibini near
Mount Frere.
These clinics will serve communities in East London, Matatiele, Mthatha, Mt
Frere, Libode and Lusikisiki. The MEC has been doing handovers in rural areas
since the beginning of April 2009. These handovers will bring the number of
clinics built in the province since 1994 to over 800, most of them in the
former Transkei.
The department had committed to build 53 more clinics, including mini
hospitals, in the current financial year. It was estimated that each of these
clinics would cost R10 to R12 million, and a mini hospital about R70
million.
