P Jordan to honour 1960s female musicians, 23 Feb

Minister Z Pallo Jordan to honour female musicians of the
'60s

19 February 2007

The Department of Arts and Culture (DAC) invites media to a night of the
'60s music awards ceremony. DAC is committed to the protection of South
Africa's film, video and sound heritage by collecting all relevant materials
and preserve them in the modern state-of-the art studios. The department
encourages individuals and groups within the film, video and sound sector to
deposit copies of their materials at the archives to ensure that they are
preserved for future generations.

In an effort to promote the practice of preserving film, video and sound
materials, the DAC started a project to honour musicians from different eras.
The project was started in 2005 and aims to educate all South Africans about
the value of archives and to instil a sense of pride in our collective
history.

The 2007 ceremony is part of the 50th anniversary of the women's anti-pass
march to the Union Buildings. As a result, the DAC wants to recognise about 50
female musicians of the 1960s for their contribution to the music industry and
the development of our country. Some of the musicians to be honoured include
Conny Mhlongo, Elizabeth Mdlalose, Emily Zwane, Gladys Setai, Bertha Egnos and
Lindi Khumalo.
