Springbok team doctor visits Northern Cape's Mayibuye
Centre

9 May 2007

Members of the media are invited to the visit of Dr Yusuf Hassan to the
newly built Mayibuye Centre in Galeshewe, Kimberley. Dr Hassan's visit is part
of the Northern Cape Province's preparation for the 2010 FIFA World Cup
spectacular. It is also the department's vision to establish a sport academy or
sport science institution in the province as part of the legacy of the 2010
FIFA World Cup. Such a legacy will ensure that all sportspersons and athletes
will have the opportunity to become elite or high performance athletes. We are
confident that the establishment of such an institution will stem the exodus of
athletes from the Northern Cape.

This seminar hopes to be the catalyst towards achieving this vision. In the
seminar, hosted by the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture in collaboration
with the Northern Cape Sport Academy, Dr Hassan will also highlight the
importance of sport science in the performance of athletes at peak or optimum
levels. Dr Hassan, a former Kimberlite, has special knowledge and qualification
in sport medicine. He is a former team doctor for Griqua Cricket and Rugby and
is the current team doctor for the national rugby team.

Central to Dr Hassan's visit is the presentation on high performance
programmes of all priority sport codes and to assess the Northern Cape under-17
cricket squad in preparation for the SA Games later this year. The current
under-17 soccer team will be assessed at a later stage. This team has been
identified to form the core group of players from which the professional side
for the Northern Cape will be established. It is also envisaged that this
soccer side will form part of the high performance programme, currently under
the auspices of the Northern Cape Sports Academy.

The visit of Dr Hassan is in line with the mandate of the 2010 Sport
Development Committee, which among others will focus on the further development
of the under-17 soccer team, club development and the development of coaching,
referees and match officials. In utilising Dr Hassan's undoubted expertise, the
department wishes to illustrate the immense value of Sport Science to coaches,
administrators and other key role-players in sport in the province. This
seminar also hopes to garner support for the development of such an academy at
the Mayibuye Centre.
