Northern Cape on female poet winner in national poetry
competition

Northern Cape female poet to be honoured

8 March 2007

The Northern Cape Department of Sport, Arts and Culture is proud to announce
that a young high school learner, Ms Mantele Moilwa has been selected as one of
twelve winners of a national poetry competition.

Ms Moilwa, a grade 12 learner at Thabane High School in Galeshewe, is one of
the young and promising poets who has been part of the Department's poetry
development programme since 2006. She is one of 50 young poets who participated
in workshops for aspiring poets, which were held in Kimberley and Warrenton.
The workshops were held under the auspices of the Department of Sport, Arts and
Culture.

Her work will be published in a book of poetry, which will be launched on
Friday, 9 March 2007 at Museum Africa in New Town, Johannesburg. Ms Moilwa will
be accompanied by her facilitator and mentor, Ms Brenda Leuw, as well as the
co-ordinator of the poetry programme, Mr K Kola.

The poetry competition was launched on 14 August 2006 as part of the 50th
Anniversary of the Women's March to the Union Buildings. In keeping with the
Department's mandate to make the arts more accessible to marginalized persons,
the poetry competition sought to bring national attention to the poetic
expression of women in nodal areas, women in places of shelter, women in
correctional facilities and young women in high school.

The competition gives women the opportunity to express their creativity
through poetry, on a platform that acknowledges and affirm their talents.

The Northern Cape Provincial Government, on behalf of all the people of the
Northern Cape, would like to extend our congratulations to Ms Moilwa and would
like to urge other aspiring artists and poets to follow in her footsteps.
