The Mafikeng Airport has started to operate Sunday flights to run between
Johannesburg and Mafikeng. This has been introduced due to the demand since the
airport started to be fully operational. Project Manager for Aviation at the
North West Department of Transport, Roads and Community Safety, Rickie Rennie,
has attributed this to the demand that has been shown by travellers for more
flights to be added.
"We believe that the demand will further rise as people get used to the fact
that the airport is fully operational," said Rennie. Newly appointed MEC for
the Department of Transport, Roads and Community Safety, Phenye Vilakazi has
called on the community of Mafikeng and neighbouring areas to make use of the
airport for more convenient travelling. "Should the demand keep on increasing,
we will increase the frequency of the flights," said Vilakazi.
The airport forms part of the Industrial Development Zone (IDZ) initiated by
the North West Provincial Government which intends to rekindle the economy of
the City of Mafikeng. The airport has been refurbished and upgraded to meet
Civil Aviation Standards; this will positively contribute to the transfer of
the international airport status from Pilanesberg to Mafikeng Airport.
The Sunday flights are as follows:
* SA 8797 15:00 JNB-MBD 16h00
* SA 8796 16:20 MBD-JNB 17h20.
