Social Development
16 August 2007
The Department of Social Development is on course taking the lead in
ensuring educational development among its employees. The department will
launch an Adult Basic Education and Training (ABET) Programme for its low level
employees with the intention to ensure that they are able to read, write, count
and communicate properly.
Adult Basic Education and Training is the conceptual foundation towards
lifelong learning and skills development. Currently over 120 departmental
employees have shown keenness in enrolling for the programme. Registered
employees are employed as cleaners, drivers, security guards and
groundsmen.
The programme will further assist such employees on issues such as career
development, achievement of economic growth, financial planning and personal
development growth of the learners. The launch of ABET is an attempt to dispute
the public perceptions that reduces the ABET programme to merely being a
programme for the illiterate or 'inferior skills'. ABET constitutes the
holistic development of an individual to fulfil his or her social (private)
economic (work) and political rights in the society.
The launch will take place as follows:
Date: 20 August 2007
Time: 09h00
Venue: Buffelspoort, Rustenburg
The media is therefore invited to cover the event.
