The Department of Social Development in the North West province will honour
heroes and heroines and will recognise their efforts in improving the quality
of life of their communities in areas such as education, health, sport and
recreation, environment, crime prevention, arts and craft and many others,
during the community builder of the year awards ceremony.
The Community Builder of the year awards is one of eleven nation-building
projects which were started thirteen years ago by the late Aggrey Klaaste
seeking to encourage the spirit of volunteerism and nation building.
Department of Social Development in the North West will therefore host the
Community Builder of the year awards ceremony. The aim of the event is to
acknowledge and celebrate the contribution of diverse individuals, groups and
institutions towards the upliftment of South African communities. It also
acknowledges community workers for their outstanding work and sacrifice.
Every year projects from the North West province represent the province
during the National Community Builder of the year awards. Most of the competing
projects are aimed at creating jobs and alleviating poverty among rural
communities of the districts. Last year alone the North West was honoured for
being the only province, which implemented the community builder programme in
its entirety.
Other competing projects are geared towards skills development, where
communities will be acquiring skills. Some of the projects have now moved from
the project stage to a fully functional business, which employs other community
members. All projects have demonstrated the government's call of Vuku Zenzele
and many other government programmes.
All nominees will be chosen under the youth, senior, adult, women and group
categories. The Department has partnered with the following institutions, the
South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC), Old Mutual, Sowetan and Makwetla
and Associates which is managing the whole process.
The media is therefore invited to cover the event. For better coverage, last
year's winners and the winning project will be availed for interviews, footage
about their projects is available.
