North West on recovering outstanding traffic fines

North West Transport recovers R56 000 in outstanding traffic
fines

23 October 2007

Fifty six thousand rand owed by motorists in traffic fines in the North West
province was collected by traffic authorities in an operation dubbed "Operation
Jaws of life" over the weekend. The operation was aimed at collecting traffic
fines amounting to millions of rand.

The operation was characterised by roadblocks in and around Mafikeng. The
North West Department of Transport, Roads and Community Safety MEC Phenye
Vilakazi has warned motorists to braze themselves for more roadblocks and
possible home and work visits aimed at recovering outstanding traffic
fines.

"We will be effectively promoting lawlessness if we don't act. We will
arrest on the spot those with outstanding warrants of arrests if they fail to
pay," said Vilakazi.

Vilakazi concluded by saying traffic laws must be respected. Meanwhile,
traffic officers have registered a series of successes in fighting against
traffic violations. They are as follows:

* two drunken drivers were arrested
* 14 drivers were issued with summons for driving unroadworthy vehicles
* 77 people were issued with summons for driving without licences
* five misused government vehicles were impounded
