The North West Provincial Legislature Portfolio Committees on Local
Government and Housing, Premier and Legislature, Health and Social Development
will be paying an oversight visit to the Merafong Local Municipality on
Tuesday, 28 August 2007 to Wednesday 29 August 2007. The purpose of the visit
is to further understand the decision made by the municipality to relocate 18
000 families from Khutsong to Welverdiend as a result of the dolomitic
area.
The delegation would also like to further acquaint themselves with the
extent of damage of the houses in the area as a result of this issue. On
Wednesday the delegation will visit Wedela and Kokosi areas to find out why the
construction of houses that was supposed to have taken place in the past six
months had not yet started. The delegation will also visit Khutsong and the
envisaged relocation area.
They will also tackle other challenges faced by the municipality. The
municipality will brief the delegation on Tuesday, 28 August 2007, from 09h00
to 14h00.
