women and children
4 February 2009
The North West Provincial Government will observe the Southern African
Development Community (SADC) programme on no violence against women and
children as follows:
Date: 6 February 2009
Time: 10h00
Venue: Barolong Boo Ratshidi Tribal Hall, Mafikeng
The commemoration is normally done at the end of the year for 16 days and
the culmination of the commemoration is on 6 December every year, which is
known as the day of the Montreal Massacre. But due to unforeseen circumstances,
this event was postponed last year in December to this Friday.
The Montreal Massacre took place on 6 December 1989 when 14 female students
were killed for simply enrolling as engineering students. Their murder gave
rise to the use of the white ribbon, and in November 1996, gave rise to the
candle lighting ceremony worldwide.
