Housing Tribunal investigates mining residences

16 July 2007

The secretariat of the North West Rental Housing Tribunal (NWRHT) conducted
inspection of houses at Moria Gold Mines Residential Complex near Carletonville
today following allegations of unsatisfactory housing and lease conditions.

The preliminary investigation conducted in terms of the Rental Housing Act
50, 1999 section 13(2b) Rental Housing Tribunal follows allegations of
unsatisfactory housing conditions at Moria Gold Mine and Blyvooruitzicht Gold
Mine Residential Complexes.

Allegations lodged with the tribunal included among others unfair rental
increases, exorbitant rental, lack of maintenance, harassment by the caretaker,
and refusal by the landlords to issue signed lease agreement copies to
tenants.

The Department of Local Government and Housing appreciates the co-operation
that the management of Moria Gold Mines afforded the secretariat. A report of
the inspection and management response to the allegations is to be tabled
before a formal sitting of the tribunal to be held at the offices of Merafong
Local Municipality on Friday, 20 July 2007 for adjudication.

Meanwhile, the management of Blyvooruitzicht Gold Mine has also committed to
co-operate with the tribunal and a date for inspection of houses at the mine's
residential complex is to be confirmed by this Friday.
