North West Premier, Edna Molewa together with Members of the Executive
Councils (MECs), Mayors, Heads of Departments and Municipal Managers, will
converge at Rustenburg tomorrow at an EXCO Lekgotla to identify service
delivery priorities for 2009/10.
EXCO Lekgotla is expected to emerge with a clear programme of action for
2009/10, strategies to promote the provincial top ten priorities as well as
practical support for local government initiatives. During the August EXCO
Lekgotla, the following top ten priorities were adopted:
* FIFA World Cup preparations
* provincial infrastructure delivery and asset management programme
* local government five year implementation (focusing on basic services and
financial management)
* provincial poverty eradication strategy
* greater Mafikeng growth and development (anchor is Mafikeng Industrial
Development Zone (MIDZ)
* Expanded Public Works (EPW) and national youth programme (for job creation
and skills development)
* greater Taung development initiative â Western frontier cattle and Taung
irrigation
* interdepartmental workplace skills programme (focus on learnerships and
internships for critical and scarce skills)
* strengthening the state (in respect of information and communications
technology (ICT), monitoring and evaluation, policy, planning,
programme/project management, research and knowledge management)
* industrial development and procurement policy development and implementation
with focus on small, medium and micro enterprise (SMME) development.
What is more important for EXCO is to accelerate service delivery and to
continuously expand access to a better life for all. Accordingly, EXCO Lekgotla
will pay focused attention to the following:
* the alignment of the provincial programme of action with the national
strategic interventions arising from the recent Cabinet Lekgotla
* progress in the implementation of the five-year local government plan
* the extent to which municipalities will be able to implement the top ten
priorities of the province.
This will be the last EXCO Lekgotla during the current term of office.
