21 April 2009
The threat by residents of Miga village near Ramatlabama border post outside
Mafikeng to blockade the road and railway line between South Africa and
Botswana, boycott and disrupt the general elections on Wednesday was retracted
on Tuesday, 21 April 2009.
The retraction follows an urgent stakeholders meeting facilitated by
officials of the Department of Developmental Local Government and Housing to
find an amicable solution to the impasse between the community, Eskom and
Mafikeng Local Municipality. Community representatives committed to suspend
disruptive action in the light of assurances that the electrification project
targeted for 168 households in the village is to commence in the next week.
âWe will brief the community on the outcomes of the progressive meeting and
assist create a conducive atmosphere for free and fair and ensure that no form
of intimidation takes place,â leader of the concerned group, Oupakie Legwase
committed after the meeting.
A community meeting to outline the scope of the project, identify a site for
the contractor and elect a Community Liaison Officer for the project is
scheduled for Friday, 24 April 2009 at 10h00.
R1,6 million is budgeted for the extension of electrical connections in the
village as part of Eskomâs electrification project for the 2009/10 financial
