Rights Day
6 December 2007
Christmas has definitely come early for 32 families in the North West, who
will be proud home owners when they get the keys to their houses on Monday, 10
December 2007, which marks the end of the 16 Days Campaign of No Violence
Against Women And Children and is the International Human Rights Day.
The North West Department of Developmental Local and Housing, has this year,
intensified its support to the 16 days of no violence campaign against women
and children, by identifying 32 destitute families across the province, to
benefit from the housing delivery programme. These beneficiaries will receive
keys to their houses at a ceremony to be held in Setlagole Stadium on 10
December 2007. The event forms part of the day's activities.
The 32 houses have been allocated to four district municipalities for the
victims of violence, the disabled and children heading households as well as
HIV and AIDS victims. These houses are at the advanced stage and will be handed
over to the beneficiaries as follows:
* Bojanala District Municipality (10 houses)
* Ngaka Modiri Molema District Municipality (10 houses)
* Bophirima District Municipality (four houses)
* Southern District Municipality (eight houses)
The North West MEC for Developmental Local Government and Housing, Howard
Yawa, said it was heart-warming to see families, who had previously never
imagined owning decent houses, finally reaping the fruits of democracy. "This
is but one of the promises we had made back in 1994, that we will make sure
that we do everything in our power to fight homelessness in our province and in
the country," said Yawa.
Meanwhile, the department has for two consecutive years, been hailed as the
best performing department in housing delivery. For the year ended 2006/07, the
department delivered 29 000 houses in respective municipalities, spending
99,95% of its housing allocation for that financial period. As at October 2007,
the department had already spent 59% of its housing allocation for the 2007/08
financial year.
