13 January 2009
The North West Provincial Government (nwpg) in partnership with the Kgetleng
River Local Municipality will commemorate the first anniversary of the 14
January 2008 Skierlik shootings when a convicted murderer Johan Nel randomly
shot and killed four people, including a six year old child, and scores of
others left injured near Swartruggens.
The commemoration will seek to:
* Set up a memorial in honour of those deceased
* maintain solidarity with the survivors of that fateful shooting
* highlight government's commitment to nation building
* intensify the struggle to completely eradicate racism and other forms of
intolerance
* ensure accelerated service delivery to the people of Skierlik.
The commemoration will take place in two phases.
The first event will be a memorial and prayer service for the family members
of the deceased and survivors. This will be a small gathering of about 100
people and will take place within the Skierlik community on Wednesday, 14
January 2009 commencing at 07h00.
The second event will be a mass service targeting about 5 000 people mainly
from the local municipality. This will be held on Sunday, 18 January 2009 at
10h00 in Skierlik. Furthermore, a memorial will be unveiled in memory of the
deceased at the Swartruggens cemetery on the same day.
Members of the media are invited to attend.
