As the custodian of older people's rights within the North West Province,
the Department of Social Development in conjunction with the Royal Bafokeng
Nation and the Rustenburg Local Municipality will be celebrating 100 years'
birthday of Tono Amanda Rasetlola of Luka in Rustenburg.
Two hundred other elderly people from the neighbouring villages of
Rustenburg who are above 70 years will also join the celebrations. Another
elderly person who is said to be a year older than Rasetlola will also join the
celebrations. The main objective by the Department of Social Development and
the Local Municipality is to ensure that the legislative mandate governing the
Department on older persons is being implemented and this occasion serves as
the launching pad for that endeavour.
According to information received, the old lady can still walk, speak
English properly and still has a retentive memory of her history. She was born
in 1907 and was blessed with nine children, two of whom still survive. She
further has 28 grandchildren, 54 great-grandchildren and 16
great-great-grandchildren, which implies that she has seen her third
generation. The oldest child is in her early seventies.
According to MEC Mangqo the gesture seeks to uphold respect and dignity for
older persons in the community and to implement developmental social welfare
services programmes by caring for people with special needs.
MEC for Social Development together with the Rustenburg Mayor and the Royal
Bafokeng Queen Mother Semane Molotlegi will join the celebrations. The media is
therefore invited to attend and cover the event.
