Sonn
28 May 2007
Born on 25 September 1949, Percy Sonn joined the office of the
Attorney-General; Cape Town on 1 August 1996.
In his capacity as Deputy Attorney-General, he applied his extensive legal
experience, built up over many years at the Cape Bar.
With the establishment of the NPA, Adv Sonn was appointed as Investigating
Director of the Directorate Organised Crime and Public Safety, on 1 November
1998.
Here, he served with distinction, leading the Directorate in its early
onslaught against urban terror, gangsterism and hijackings.
When the Scorpions were formally created on 12 January 2001, Adv Sonn was
appointed its Head by President Mbeki.
He operated with distinction in overseeing the amalgamation of three
Directorates nationally and in cementing the Directorate of Special Operations
(DSO), as an indestructible force in the law enforcement landscape, in South
Africa and internationally.
In this time, the DSO achieved some groundbreaking successes in asset
forfeiture and racketeering cases; and in building public confidence in the
countryâs fight against organised crime.
Percy Sonn departed the NPA with effect from 1 January 2003, to pursue a
career in the private sector. He will be remembered for his legal acumen, sharp
wit, industry, sacrifice and undauntedness.
We convey our condolences to his wife, children and family.
May his soul rest in peace
