The National Prosecuting Authority will be hosting its annual Stakeholder
Conference starting on Wednesday, 28 to Friday, 30 March 2007 at Gallagher
Estate, Midrand.
The conference follows a series of workshops hosted by the organisation
during July and August 2006. The aim of the workshops was to assess
stakeholders' needs and expectations of the NPA. These "Conversations with
Stakeholders" proved to be very successful, and assisted in the development of
the NPA's Strategy 2020. The conference, which is the first of its kind, will
build on this foundation and will provide a platform for the launch of the NPA
Strategy 2020.
The theme of the conference is "Justice in our society so that people can
live in freedom and security."
The conference will cover different topics addressed by local and
international government, business and civil society speakers. Topics include
International and African perspectives, the impact of crime on the economy,
crime trends, the South African Police Service (SAPS) medium term strategy,
socio demographics and the victim perspective among others.
Speakers include, Ms Brigitte Mabandla, Minister of Justice and
Constitutional Development; Mr Trevor Manuel, Minister of Finance; Advocate
Vusi Pikoli, National Director of Public Prosecutions; Advocate Charles Leacock
QC, Director of Public Prosecutions, Barbados; Mr Pieter du Rand, Chief
Director: Court Services, Department of Justice and Constitutional Development;
Dr Johan Burger, Senior Researcher, Institute for Security Studies;
Commissioner Andre Pruis, Deputy National Commissioner, SAPS; Mr Craig Schwabe,
Knowledge Systems, Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) and Father Michael
Lapsley, Healing of Memories.
