Rainy seasons will pass with ease for hundreds of families that currently
live dangerously alongside the banks of Juskei River, in Alexandra.
Every year scores of people are swept away in seasonal floods that take
place in the settlement along the Juskei riverbanks.
Today the Gauteng MEC for Housing, Ms Nomvula Mokonyane, launched the K206
Housing development project. This project is one of the innovative ways in
which the Department deals with housing delivery.
The K206 housing project is a cluster development that houses both
Reconstruction and Development Programme (RDP) houses and double story
accommodation. The latter will be mainly for rental purposes.
This project will also benefit those people who do not qualify for housing
subsidies in terms of government policy.
Most of the people living alongside the river do not qualify. Therefore,
this housing project will accommodate these people mainly through rental
stock.
âThe K206 housing development project will bring relief to hundreds of
Skwetla families, who will for the first time be afforded the dignity of a
proper roof over their heads," said Mokonyane.
This development is important in that it uses high density accommodation,
therefore addressing the unavailability of land. This initiative seeks to
accommodate people within the same area as opposed to relocating them to far
flung areas.
The project will provide 1760 low cost houses (RDP) and 2156 rental units
with backyard rooms. The total cost of the project is 196 million rand. Work on
the project has already started and will be completed in March 2008.
